Types of expert opinions

Depending on the question and the instruction, one of the following products is prepared. Scope, examination requirements and fee are agreed in writing before work begins. The outcome remains open until the assessment is complete.

Specialist statement

A concise professional assessment of a specific question, usually based on the files. Suitable when an initial reliable classification is needed, for example before deciding on a full expert opinion.

Findings report

A presentation of the findings obtained from the examination and the files, without an extensive expert evaluation. Suitable when the state of findings is to be documented.

Social medical performance assessment

Assessment of capacity to work and participation in mental and psychosomatic illness, for example regarding reduced earning capacity, occupational disability, rehabilitation and degree of disability.

Full expert opinion

A complete assessment with file review, personal examination and a transparent derivation of the conclusions. The opinion expressly states the limits of its evidential value.

Method-critical review

Review of an existing expert opinion: the question posed, the factual basis, the methodology, the specialist conclusions and the internal conclusiveness. The review is based on the files; the outcome may confirm the opinion, confirm it in part, or contain objections.

Counter and second opinions

An independent re-answering of the medical questions on the basis of the documents and, where required, a personal examination.

More on the review of existing opinions can be found under Counter and second opinions, and on the process and fee agreement under Process and fees.
